Despite her size, she can easily enter the most beautiful coves and small ports of the Greek islands, due to her shallow draft of just 2.20 meters. With her two masts and a jib boom, with sails mounted in the old tradition, bronze and wood pulleys, and classic hemp rigging, the Astarte looks wonderfully authentic as she runs to windward on a summer’s day across what the Greek epic poet Homer once called the “wine-dark” sea. Life aboard the Astarte will offer you a full range of marine pleasures and cruising activities. As well as the Sofas areas where you can sunbathe or relax in the shade of tents if you prefer, the crew can help with multiple other activities, including Water skiing, Stand-Up Paddling, Line fishing, Snorkeling, and Sea bob (mini underwater scooter). The Astarte is also equipped with a fast, rigid-hulled Zodiac boat to carry you swiftly to Greece’s most beautiful deserted beaches. The inflatable relaxation platform with cushions and umbrellas also provides an ideal spot for swimming, sunbathing and taking it easy in complete privacy. And you’ll always remember your midnight bathing exploits, thanks to our submarine night-time lighting that transforms the sea around the ship into a magical private pool. The Astarte’s crew is there to help you enjoy yourself to the full. The four crew members will make you feel completely at home with the utmost discretion. Just choose what you want to do and where to go and send in your suggestions, even before you arrive aboard the boat.

Aristotle Onassis Aristotle Socrates Onassis (Greek: Αριστοτέλης Ωνάσης, Aristotelis Onasis; 15 January 1906 -- 15 March 1975), commonly called Ari or Aristo Onassis, was a prominent Greek shipping magnate. Onassis was born in Karatass, a suburb of Smyrna (now İzmir, Turkey) to Socrates and Penelope Onassis (née Dologu), who married Socrates at the age of 17. Onassis had one full-sister, Artemis, and two half-sisters, Kalliroi and Merope, by his father's second marriage following Penelope's death at the age of 33. Socrates Onassis came from the village of Moutalasski (now named Talas), near Cappadocia in Asia Minor, which is the present-day Kayseri province, in central Turkey. In 1923, Aristotle Onassis left for Buenos Aires, Argentina, by Nansen passport and got his first job with the British United River Plate Telephone Company. He was one of the world's richest men, but it was the glamour of the women in his life, such as Maria Callas and Jackie Kennedy, which brought him real fame. Onassis's childhood was dominated by the principles of the Orthodox Church. Unsurprisingly, this upbringing influenced him throughout his life. While not an openly religious man, Onassis retained many of the qualities imparted to him through the church. He left Smyrna in 1922, travelling to Argentina, where he revived the family tobacco business by building a new market for the product there. In a few years the business flourished and Onassis had made his first million. The tobacco business was too limited for a man of Onassis' dreams and, in the early 1930s, he purchased his first ships. It took him only a few days to expand his fleet and, by the end of the decade, he had entered the tanker business, which was potentially far more profitable. In 1946, Onassis married Tina Livanos, the daughter of Stavros Livanos, an important Greek shipowner. Tina had American citizenship and they set up home in New York. Later, Onassis became brother-in-law to Stavros Niarchos, another shipowner and with that, the three men, Onassis, Livanos and Niarchos, formed the most powerful shipping group in the world. Rivalry would later develop, but it remained a powerful force. In 1957, Onassis turned his attention skywards and took over the failing Greek National Airline, making it into a private business, Olympic Airways of Greece. Onassis divorced his wife in 1961. He had a long relationship with the singer, Maria Callas, but in 1968 married the most famous woman in the world at that time, Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy, the widow of President John F. Kennedy. Tragedy struck in 1973, when Alexander Onassis, Onassis's son from his first marriage, died in a plane accident. Onassis was devastated. Not long after, on 15 March, 1975, Onassis died. He was buried on his island near his son Alexander.

Tweet this video! - http://clicktotweet.com/aPe_I For an industry that basically runs the world economy most people know very little about the enormous complex that touches almost every single thing you use. From the chair you are sitting on to the yogurt you're eating to the steering wheel in you car, all those things were made possible thanks to an industry that has been operating since man learned to float. These are 25 mind blowing facts about the shipping industry. https://twitter.com/list25 https://www.facebook.com/list25 http://list25.com Check out the text version too! - http://list25.com/25-mind-blowing-facts-shipping-industry/ Here's a preview: Around two-thirds of ship crews in the world have no means of communication while they are on the open sea. Only about 1 in 10 will have freely available Internet. In 2010, Somali pirates were holding 544 seafarers hostage. Every year, more than 2,000 sailors die at sea, and an incredible two ships are lost every day. In 2012, the attack rates on seafarers was higher than the number of violent crimes in South Africa, the highest-crime nation on Earth. A container ship travels the equivalent of three-quarters of the way to the moon and back in one year during its regular travel across the oceans. The largest ships can cost over 200 million dollars to build. Females constitute only about 2% of seafarers. People from the Philippines make up more than a third of all crews worldwide, with nearly a quarter million at sea. The largest ships can store 745 million bananas in nearly 15,000 containers. That's about one for every person in Europe and North America. Shipping is one of the oldest industries in the world. Today, however, it plays as important a role as ever. There are approximately 55,000 merchant ships carrying cargo around the world. Around 1.5 million seafarers are employed by the global shipping industry In 2009, the 15 biggest ships in the world gave off the same amount of greenhouse gas as 760 million cars, or about two cars for every American. Compared to trucks and planes however, shipping is still the greenest form of transport, relatively speaking. Worldwide, only around 2% to 10% of containers are actually inspected. U.S. ports normally inspect roughly 5% of the 17 million containers arriving at the border every year. Germany, Japan, and Greece are the three countries with the biggest fleets based on total dead weight tonnage controlled by parent companies located in these countries. Having made the previous two points, it's worth mentioning that if you added shipping to the list of the world's most polluting countries, it would come in sixth place. Shipping companies are extremely secretive. For example, the official Greek shipowners' association won't even reveal how many members it has. As of this moment there are roughly 20 million containers crossing the world. A container ship engine has about 1,000 times more power than a family car. To give you an example of how much it costs to ship something, a bicycle would be roughly 10 dollars while a soda can would be less than a penny. Economically speaking, the shipping industry is enormous. In the United Kingdom, it accounts for more of the GDP than restaurants, takeaway food, and civil engineering combined. Shipping is so big in fact that it constitutes roughly 90 percent of the world's trade. If you were to line up the containers on just one ship they would easily stretch nearly halfway around the planet. If you stacked them up, and they would reach to nearly 7,500 Eiffel Towers and if you unloaded their cargo onto trucks the traffic would stretch for 60 miles. Shipping is one of the first industries to adopt widely implemented international safety standards. In 2011 the 360 commercial ports in the United States received goods from abroad worth $1.73 trillion. The U.S. relies on shipping to bring in two-thirds of its oil supply. In the global fleet there are six types of ships: General cargo ships, bulk carriers, fishing vessels, container ships, passenger ships, and tankers. Shipping is cheap. It's so cheap in fact, that rather than fillet its own fish, Scotland can send its cod 10,000 miles across the ocean to China to be filleted, and then sent back for less than the price of doing it themselves. The port of Piraeus is the EU's southern gateway to the Mediterranean. The port has changed radically in the past two years. The Chinese company Cosco has bought the management of Pier No. 2 for 35 years. What will the future hold? Will it benefit Greece? How important for Europe is the presence of the Chinese giant at its borders? EuroparlTV went to the Greek port. Cosco's ambition is to transform Piraeus into a Mediterranean Singapore, and for the last two years it has been investing in the Greek port. Captain Fu Cheng Qiu is the managing director. How important is the strategic role of Piraeus for Cosco? We studied it for a long time. We think that the port of Piraeus is a very important harbour, because it has a very good location between the Far East and the Mediterranean and Europe. In the past two years, container activity on Pier No. 2 has increased. New clients, increased traffic, and bigger ships. Nearly 1/5 of containers arriving in Piraeus are destined for the Greek market. The rest are destined for other, mainly European, markets. All 20 of the biggest shipping lines go to this terminal. Today, the port is divided into two parts. Here is the boundary. Cosco on one side, Piraeus Port Authority on the other. It was difficult for Cosco in the beginning. The dockers wanted to annul the agreement. Cosco gave them a good chance. Cosco is their future. Cosco is here to stay. The future looks bright for the local economy. Giorgos and Babis have worked in the Greek part of the port for years. They represent the dockworkers' union. Our income has been cut by 35% since 2009, but people who work for Cosco are paid much lower wages. This is due to Cosco's policy of working with subcontractors. How Cosco operates its pier is their business, we do not interfere. We are trying to preserve our industrial relations during this difficult crisis. You hear a lot, but nothing is proven. Dimitris and Nicos used to work for Cosco through a Greek company. They were fired by the Greek contractor because they tried to create a union. At some point we decided to create a committee to obtain better working conditions in our machinery, which had many problems. As soon as the company was informed, we were fired. The presence of China in Greece was always supported by Greek shipowners. Nicos Vernicos is one of them. He owns tug boats and is working with Cosco. Our workload in Piraeus has increased. I made investments in the tug boat fleet, we hired sailors who are still paid without any pay-cuts to their salaries. Today, Cosco is building a third pier. It wants to expand its investments in other sectors, such as processing. The installation of Cosco in the port of Piraeus boosted the promotion of Chinese products in the centre of Athens enormously. Here is Chinatown, a shopping centre where all the handling is done. The big question is how, with minor processing, products 'Made in China' will be transformed into those 'Made in Europe'. It's easy. For example, if a button is added to a Chinese shirt in Greece, the product acquires a Greek identity, so it can be transferred tax-free all over the European Union. According to many observers, it's an issue that will be targeted by EU control mechanisms in the future. EuroparlTV video ID: 0c3054a3-244e-43bc-a04c-a016011bad20

Evangelia is a shipwrecked 7,355-gross register ton (GRT) refrigerated cargo ship at Costinești, Romania, on the Black Sea coast of Romania. She was built in Northern Ireland in 1942 as the Empire ship Empire Strength, was operated by Blue Star Line from 1942 to 1961, was bought by Greek shipowners in 1965 and wrecked in 1968. The ship had four names in her career, having been renamed Saxon Star in 1946, Redbrook in 1961 and E Evangelia in 1965. Harland and Wolff's Belfast yard built the ship for the UK Ministry of War Transport (MoWT). She was launched on 28 May as Empire Strength and completed in December. She was a motor ship, with a six-cylinder four-stroke single-acting marine Diesel engine developing 490 NHP. The engine was built by Harland and Wolff but was a Burmeister & Wain design from Denmark. Her navigation equipment included wireless direction finding and an echo sounding device. On 15 October 1968 E Evangelia was sailing in ballast from Rijeka in Yugoslavia to Constanța in Romania when she ran aground in the Black Sea off Costinești about 16 nautical miles (30 km) south of Constanța. She was declared a total loss, and there is a suggestion that the shipwreck could have been an insurance fraud. The ship remains a wreck at Costinești. Her back is broken, and two large areas of plates are missing from her starboard side. Costinești is a small seaside resort, for which the wreck is a local attraction.
